A post on the Library of Congress blog reports that the organization recently posted a collection of Civil War-era photos on the social media site Flickr as a way to share these photos with a much wider audience than will be able to see them in person as a part of their exhibit “The Last Full Measure.”

Here is an example of an online exhibit based around one specific concept that works very well. The HerStory Scrapboook catalogues articles from The New York Times’ coverage of the women’s suffrage movement of the early twentieth century. The site provides summaries and links to the articles about the movement, divided by years (1917, 1918, 1919, and 1920) as well as providing both a prologue and epilogue with additional links. The Chronicle of Philanthropy has responded to Seth Godin’s scolding of non-profits’ “non-use” of social media. One of Seth’s points is that all non-profits should have a group of volunteers ready to head up their social media efforts, and if they don’t, “then you’re not working on something important enough.” I’m not sure whether that last bit refers to

The Washington Post ran a story today about “Smithsonian 2.0,” a gathering of digital age thought leaders and organizational leaders who spent the weekend looking at new ways to use technology in the Smithsonian’s work. It’s worth a read.

Most interesting is the discussion of how the role of curator changes once museum collections are placed online. By opening up your website to allow your visitors to comment, you are losing some control over educational content, but you are also engaging visitors on an entirely new level. Their input on an artifact can provide completely new views, new knowledge, new interpretations. It’s something to consider. Thoughts? Sound off below!
